Men’s Health Month
June is Men’s Health Month. Part of a Congressional health education program, Men’s Health Month is observed nationwide with screenings, health fairs, media appearances, and other health education and outreach activities.
The goal of Men’s Health Month is to increase awareness surrounding preventable health problems and promote early detection and treatment of disease within the male population. Having a month devoted to men’s health gives healthcare providers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage the male population to keep regular medical appointments and seek early treatment for injury and disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventative services than men. In 1920, women lived an average of one year longer than men. Now, men, on average, die almost five years earlier than women.
If you have a special man in your life, whether it be a husband, boyfriend, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, or friend, take a moment this month to remind them that they’re important to you and encourage them to participate in Men’s Health Month by ensuring they’ve had their annual wellness exams and evaluations. If necessary, offer to accompany him to offer support on a doctor’s visit if he’s feeling hesitant.
You may also consider taking the opportunity to use Men’s Health Month to celebrate a man in your life who has recently overcome a health obstacle or illness, or to remind someone currently battling a health condition that you’re thinking of them. By sending a Meal Gift, that includes health-conscious options such as chicken noodle soup or roasted chicken, you’re letting them know that you care about them, their health, and their well-being.
